When circus-dwelling Gemma Flannery learns she will be attending public school for the first time in her seventeen years, little does she know that fitting in with her 12th-grade classmates will be the least of her concerns. A pro at hiding her knack for seeing the dead (“shades”), Gemma is grieving the recent suicide of her mentally ill mother, a process eased by the introduction of her first real love interest, the charming and painfully handsome Henry Dmitri, who is harboring his own collection of dangerous secrets. Together, they will be presented with a frightening challenge: to assume their roles as heirs to a 3000-year-old magical text, the AVRAKEDAVRA, a book the über-rich, sleight-of-being master Lucian Dmitri would do anything to get his hands on. As each terrifying layer in her new reality melts away, Gemma unearths truths that her quiet, nomadic life with the Cinzio Traveling Players is not at all what she’d always cherished. Gemma and Henry must rely on each other to stop Lucian’s diabolical plotting that will bring the world to its tired, scab-riddled knees, and are sent on the flight of their young lives, to save themselves, their families, and the world from the darkest kind of destruction.
Let the chase begin.
I find this cover fascinating! The color of Gemma’s hair is bright and wonderful! Just as described between the pages of this book.
Gemma’s story is very different and I have not come across one like this in the YA genre as of yet. I enjoyed the whole circus scenario. Who doesn’t love the circus? It was interesting to see how some things were actually run under the big top.
The characters are very enjoyable. The book is full of some strange characters that you would definitely expect to find in the circus. The exception would probably have to be Junie and Ash. They just seemed way too normal.
The love affair between Henry and Gemma is charming. Henry gives Gemma a little something extra that she never could have gotten from Ash. I really did enjoy the character of Ash being such a “bad boy”. Even after the book was finished, I could not help but think that Ash will come to his senses and tell Gemma how he really feels.
Throughout the book there were surprises around every turn. You had to keep on your toes because you never knew what was going to come at you next. There were many times throughout that I was left with my mouth gaping open in complete shock!
I can’t wait to see what is in store for us in the next book in the series, coming sometime in the fall of 2011.
“You know what they say. When God slams a door on your fingers, he opens a window so you can scream for help.”
