Only I saw Narian for who he truly was: a young man with courage and an independent mind, and made to pay for what was outside his control. He couldn’t help his past any more than he could help the way those intense, deep-blue eyes pierced me and held me captive.

An eighteen-year-old queen in love with the enemy as their countries pass the point of no return…

Bound to a man she cannot love, Queen Alera of Hytanica must forget Narian, the young man who holds her heart. For Narian is destined to conquer Hytanica at the behest of his master, the powerful magic-user known as the Overlord. Alera doesn’t truly believe Narian will fight against Hytanica-until Cokyrian troops attack with Narian commanding the charge.

Faced with the greatest betrayal a heart can know, Alera must set aside personal feelings and lead her kingdom through its darkest time. And when all hope, will and courage seem lost, she must find strength and remember that even the blackest night must have a dawn….

Review (*May contain mild spoilers)

First off, click on the link to see my review of Legacy. I was mesmerized reading the first book and was left tormented at the ending. I could not wait to dive right into this book! I am still amazed that Ms. Kluver is so young (only 19 yrs. old) and manages to write so eloquently.

This book starts off exactly where Legacy leaves us. Right away, we are thrust into the nuptials of Alera and Steldor. All the while, the search is still on for Narian. Alera is trying to come to terms of how to serve as the Queen and try to be the wife to a husband that she despises. Her heart is still breaking over Narian and she literally is falling apart.

This is where I am sooo conflicted! In Legacy, I was in love with Narian and could not see Alera with anyone other than him. In this second book, I am sooo much in love with Steldor and found myself just screaming at Alera to just submit to his love and love him back.

Steldor had matured a lot in this book and tried really hard to gain Alera’s affections. At one point, I thought maybe she would give in.

Steldor
The reader knows why Narian is doing the things he is during this book, but cannot help feeling frustrated with him in the process. He does not have much of a presence in this book, but the times that he does, really packs a punch!

Narian

Alera learns a lot about herself and realizes she is stronger than she had thought. She gets a lot of advice from her mother and of course, London. She tests the boundaries and I really enjoyed her “I am woman, hear me roar” attitude.

The book ended very well and it seemed that all the pieces were wrapped up into a neat and tidy bow. There was action, drama, romance and death. I am curious as to what will happen in the next installment and cannot wait for it!

At a town fair on the coast of Oregon, handsome Native American carny, Vincent Youngblood, bestows an unforgettable kiss on shy, awkward teenager, Charlotte Davenport. Then disappears without another word, leaving her baffled and enamored.

Ten years later, Charlotte is still living in the small fishing town of Astoria, while being trained to–reluctantly–take over for her philandering hotelier father when he retires. After all, who else will do it? Her two perfect sisters are busy being married to their flawless husbands and having cookie cutter children, while Charlotte remains single, childless, and every bit as mousy as she was a decade ago.

As Charlotte struggles to climb out from underneath her judgmental parents thumb, the carnival rolls back into town, and Charlotte finds herself face to face with Vin again. He’s back to run his father’s carnival, walking away from a promising career in medicine he started in Chicago. Will her biased and judgmental family accept her relationship with a man who is not only a Native American, but works as a carny for a living? And what unsavory secrets bind the well-educated and seemingly superlative Vin to that ramshackle carnival? After all, you can’t judge a carny by its cover.
