As Charlotte steps through the gate, she has a strong feeling that nothing will ever be the same again.
Moving back to South Carolina after three years away, Charlotte knows she’s going to have to face people from her past and adjust to a new high school, but she’s completely unprepared for what else waits for her in Charleston.
Drawn through an old garden gate, Charlotte discovers a hidden world where she meets Calvin, a boy to whom she is inexplicably attracted. As Charlotte is pulled deeper into this hidden world, it’s up to her older brother Kevin to rescue her. No matter how hard Kevin tries, the rescue depends upon Charlotte fighting her intense feelings for Calvin while mastering a set of abilities that she has only just discovered she possesses.
Charlotte is kind of a loner, where her brother, Kevin is kind of the more popular one that is always going to parties and loves playing on sports teams. Charlotte does not want any part of any kind of teams and she never goes to parties even when her brother throws them at her own house. she just stays in her room reading or playing her cello.
After living in Alaska for the past three years, Charlotte and her brother move back to their home town of Charleston, NC. This is when Charlotte starts having strange dreams about the gate in her mother’s garden. The exact gate that as a child she and her brother were told to never go near and stay as far away from it as possible. Charlotte never thought anything about it until now and she has a strange pull to find out more about what is on the other side of that gate.
There are many unique characters that each have their own place in this story. My favorite is Liam. Liam is Kevin’s best friend and also the person that Charlotte had always had a huge crush on. I think Liam really cares for Charlotte and always is looking out for her. I also think that there could possibly be a romance between the two, hopefully in the next book!
Ms. Ivy’s writing style was very easy to follow and I look forward to reading Perilous light.
I snapped out of my hurt and spit out-“Yours? I’m yours? I am nobody’s possession. Maybe in this crazy world you still treat women like the Middle Ages, but where I come from, women are encouraged to be independent and strong. We’re not owned like property.”
-“Property? Charlotte, you know i did not mean it that way. I just meant that you are meant to be with me,” Calvin said sadly.
I knew that if I was going to make my move, now was the time. I let the words out. “If I am going to be treated like a prisoner, then why not chain me up and throw me in a dungeon?”
For some reason, those words did the trick. Calvin stopped arguing.
Blake took advantage of his silence. “Clearly, Charlotte is not to be reasoned with right now. She wants to be treated like a prisoner; we will give her that. Of course, that is only if you agree Calvin?”
“You think we should put her in the dungeon?” Calvin asked tentatively.
“A few hours down there and she will realize how silly she is being. See how she behaves when she is actually a prisoner.” Blake looked at Calvin for approval.
Calvin tried one last time to hold my hand, but I pulled it back. He nodded to Blake. Trying to avoid looking at Calvin, I noticed a look of shock crossing Jame’s face. Calvin gestured to the armed Bravado at the door and told them to escort me down to the dungeon.
As I was led out of the room, Calvin called out to me using almost the exact words Blake had used the night before, “Charlotte, Bellgard is your home now, and the sooner you accept that, the easier it will be for all of us.” When I didn’t respond, he continued, “As soon as you are ready to return to me, you will be released immediately.”
I couldn’t even look at him. As much as my heart ached, I tried to reassure myself that my mission was accomplished. My reassurances did nothing; I was led down to the dungeon with tears streaming down my face.

Amy is fine living in the shadows of beautiful Lila and uber-cool Cassie, because at least she’s somewhat beautiful and uber-cool by association. But when their dates stand them up for prom, and the girls take matters into their own hands—earning them a night in jail outfitted in satin, stilettos, and Spanx—Amy discovers even a prom spent in handcuffs might be better than the humiliating “rehabilitation techniques” now filling up her summer. Worse, with Lila and Cassie parentally banned, Amy feels like she has nothing—like she is nothing.
Navigating unlikely alliances with her new coworker, two very different boys, and possibly even her parents, Amy struggles to decide if it’s worth being a best friend when it makes you a public enemy. Bringing readers along on an often hilarious and heartwarming journey, Amy finds that maybe getting a life only happens once you think your life is over.
