You think your school’s scary?
Get a load of these teachers:
“Ms. Fang,” an 850-year-old vampire
“Dr. Dragonbreath,” who just might eat you before recess
“Mr. Snakeskin”–science class is so much more fun when it’s taught by someone who’s half zombie
“Mrs. T”–break the rules and spend your detention with a hungry “Tyrannosaurus rex”
Gargoyles, goblins, and Frankenstein’s monster on the loose
The world’s most frighteningly delicious school lunch
The narrator’s an eleven-year-old ghost
Join Charles “New Kid” Nukid as he makes some very Scary friends–including Petunia, Johnny, and Peter the Wolf–and figures out that Scary School can be just as funny as it is spooky
“Ms. Fang is the nicest, sweetest teacher at Scary School. She only ate twelve kids last year.”
I do not normally review middle grade books, but this one piqued my interest and the interest of my 8-year-old daughter. Just the fact that the author is Derek The Ghost was enough for us to want to pick up this book.
Derek the ghost is the narrator on our tour through scary school. Charles Nukid is starting at the school and boy is he in for a surprise.
I loved this book and so did my daughter. The illustrations were beautiful and the writing was witty and fun. It grasped my daughter’s attention, which can tend to be a very hard task and she looked forward to her daily dose of scary school every night.
I cannot tell you which character was our favorite because there were so many great ones! Each character was unique and special in their own way and boy was there ever a cast of characters.
All I can say is that if you are looking for a great middle grade read, then this is the book for you! I believe it is one that my daughter will return to again and again!
And Savannah gives it a huge “Thumbs Up!

Don’t Sweat. Don’t Laugh. Don’t draw attention to yourself. And most of all, whatever you do, do not fall in love with one of them.
Gene is different from everyone else around him. He can’t run with lightning speed, sunlight doesn’t hurt him and he doesn’t have an unquenchable lust for blood. Gene is a human, and he knows the rules. Keep the truth a secret. It’s the only way to stay alive in a world of night—a world where humans are considered a delicacy and hunted for their blood.
When he’s chosen for a once in a lifetime opportunity to hunt the last remaining humans, Gene’s carefully constructed life begins to crumble around him. He’s thrust into the path of a girl who makes him feel things he never thought possible—and into a ruthless pack of hunters whose suspicions about his true nature are growing. Now that Gene has finally found something worth fighting for, his need to survive is stronger than ever—but is it worth the cost of his humanity?
