Rory Miller had one chance to fight back and she took it. Rory survived and the serial killer who attacked her escaped. Now that the infamous Steven Nell is on the loose, Rory must enter the witness protection program. Entering the program alongside her, is her father and sister Darcy. The trio starts a new life and a new beginning leaving their friends and family behind without a goodbye.

Starting over in a new town with only each other is unimaginable for Rory and Darcy. They were inseparable as children but now they can barely stand each other. As the sisters settle in to Juniper Landing, a picturesque vacation island, it seems like their new home may be just the fresh start they need. They fall in with a group of beautiful, carefree teens and spend their days surfing, partying on the beach, and hiking into endless sunsets. Just as they’re starting to feel safe again, one of their new friends goes missing. Is it a coincidence? Or is the nightmare beginning all over again?

My Thoughts

This book was absolutely awesomesauce!!! There was action, adventure and a little bit of creepy thrown in there!

The book starts off with Rory taking a short cut through the woods to get home after school. She bumps into her math teacher, someone whom she admires and trusts. She gets a strange vibe from him right before he attacks. Let me tell you, she fights with everything she has and gets away! YAY for her!!!! The FBI then sends Rory, her sister and their father into the witness protection program after they find out that Mr. Nell was indeed a serial killer and has killed 14 other girls. Rory is the first to get away and they expect her to get a visit from him soon.

Her family is sent to a Juniper Island where it is beautiful and picturesqe but a little strange. Things keep happening that she can’t explain. The island kids are weird and seem like they are in a cult. And she keeps hearing someone calling her name and whistling Mr. Nell’s favorite song…The Long And Winding Road. CREEPY!!!

I really liked Rory herself. Her sister…GRRRRR! Her sister seemed like such a spoiled brat that just wanted her own way all the time. It was soo strange that Rory was almost killed and all her sister worried about was being mad that they had to move. She didn’t even fear for her sister’s life!!! Her father was a little out of the loop too until they got to the island and he decided to actually be a parent.

Even though some of the characters frustrated me, I still loved the character of Rory and I had to continue to find out exactly what happens to her!

WOW oh WOW!!!! I was NOT expecting that ending and it threw a whole new spin on the book!!! Be prepared to be left on a cliff! A huge one!!! We are talking Everest!!!

I really enjoyed the fact that I had NO idea of what was going to happen. I could not even guess! Also, that Ms. Brian kept me guessing all the way through the book until the very end, then gave me a HUGE whammy! I can’t wait to start the next book, Hereafter!!! I am hoping that some of my questions will be answered because it seems that I still have lots!!! For example:

If Mr. Nell was on the Island does that make him like Rory and her family??

What about Christopher? Will he come into play in the next book again? He seemed to be a big part of this one.

Thank you to Hyperion for the review copy:)
