To survive in a ruined world, she must embrace the darkness…

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a walled-in city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten. Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them—the vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself dies and becomes one of the monsters.

Forced to flee her city, Allie must pass for human as she joins a ragged group of pilgrims seeking a legend—a place that might have a cure for the disease that killed off most of civilization and created the rabids, the bloodthirsty creatures who threaten human and vampire alike. And soon Allie will have to decide what and who is worth dying for…again.

Enter Julie Kagawa’s dark and twisted world as an unforgettable journey begins.

In Allison Sekemoto’s world, there is one rule left: Blood calls to blood

She has done the unthinkable: died so that she might continue to live. Cast out of Eden and separated from the boy she dared to love, Allie will follow the call of blood to save her creator, Kanin, from the psychotic vampire Sarren. But when the trail leads to Allie’s birthplace in New Covington, what Allie finds there will change the world forever—and possibly end human and vampire existence.

There’s a new plague on the rise, a strain of the Red Lung virus that wiped out most of humanity generations ago—and this strain is deadly to humans and vampires alike. The only hope for a cure lies in the secrets Kanin carries, if Allie can get to him in time.

Allison thought that immortality was forever. But now, with eternity itself hanging in the balance, the lines between human and monster will blur even further, and Allie must face another choice she could never have imagined having to make

My Thoughts:

This is the first series that I have read by Ms. Kagawa and I can tell you that I will be definitely picking up more!! I know what all of you are thinking right now….1. Heather! Why did you wait so long? and 2. You know that the last book in this series is out already right? Well, first off, I cannot tell you why I waited so long?? I guess that I just wanted to discover this author on my own without all the hype! AND, YES! I know the last book is out and I cannot wait to get it into my hot little hands but since I am kinda sorta on a book buying ban… will have to wait until I get more of my 164 TBR books read!!!

Now, on to the review….

I have not read a vampire story in quite a long time and felt that it was time. I had fell so in love with these paranormal creatures a long time ago with Twilight (and yes, I still love that trilogy! Don’t make fun) but they ended up being all the rage and it was hard to find a book at one point that did not involve vampires! So, I went on a little vampire hiatus and am glad that I did because it made me love the first & second in this trilogy even more!

SO this story is from Allison’s POV. She lives in the fringe which is basically the outskirts of her city. Why you ask? Because she does not want to be controlled by the vampires that rule the city. She wants to live on her own terms and watched what it did to her mother when you live by the vamps rules.

Living on the fringe is tough because you do not get anything handed to you. You have to literally fend for yourself to eat and find living quarters. Allison hangs with a small gang that only consists of four people. One of whom is Stick. He is younger than her but scared Shitless! If Allison did not help him survive on a daily basis, he would probably be dead!

One day, Allison decides to venture outside of the city limits to scavange for food. Noone likes going outside because the infected live there. They are called the Rabids and they will tear your flesh apart. Allison stumbles upon a cellar loaded with canned goods and convinces the rest of the crew to go with her to collect the reward. This is literally their undoing and what happens this fateful day, Allison can never undo! She makes a hard choice and one she will have to live with for eternity.

I really enjoyed the take on vampires. It was written superbly and it was not your typical bloodsucker story. The storyline was unique and one that I had never read before. My favorite character would have to be Allison. She is kind of kick ass! She really cares about people and that shows in her actions. She can be tough when she needs to be and kind when it is called for. She also is a tad bit snarky with those she does not care for.

“The mighty hunter,” I quipped as we snuck out the backdoor, escaping into the yard. “He can take down vicious rabids and rampaging boars, but one old lady can make him flee in terror.”

“One scary old lady,” he corrected me, looking relieved to be out of the house. “You didn’t hear what she told me when I got up — you’re so cute I could put you in a pie. Tell me that’s not the creepiest thing you’ve ever heard.” His voice climbed a few octaves, turning shrill and breathy. “Today for dessert, we have apple pie, blueberry pie and Ezekiel pie.”

The second book, The Eternity Cure, was just as good as the first! You know how sometimes, the second book kind of feels like a filler book? Well, not in this case. The actions just ramps up and keeps going through out the whole book. We meet a few new characters as well as some old popping up where we least expect them to! I do not want to go into too much detail for those that have not read the first book yet! (trying to keep this spoiler free)

I also must talk a little about the romance going on! Don’t get me wrong, there is a little and it does not monopolize the whole book, but boy oh boy!!! Who doesn’t love a sweet and innocent young lad whom will stand up for himself and those he loves? hmm hmm, anyone??

*Small Spoiler Ahead!*

We definitely get this in Zeke. He is kind, but also tough. He stands up for what he believes in. Now he and Allison did not have a great love affair right from the start. They did go through quite a rocky patch which made me love them together even more. It was not insta love but, they had to work for it. I was happy when they finally got together and Allison got her head out of her you know where:)

“Only death will take me away from you, vampire girl,” he whispered. “And even then, I’ll watch over you from wherever I end up.”   –The Eternity Cure

*End Of Spoiler*

So, In conclusion, I highly recommend this trilogy to anyone whom enjoys paranormal reads! Now, I just have to read more books so that I can buy the last one, The Forever Song. Then I can come back here and let you all know my thoughts!
