My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I do not even know where to start with this book! I gave it a four star rating due to the fact that I could not put it down and basically read the whole thing in one sitting. I had to find out where all of these crazy characters ended up which brought me into the wee hours of the morning, sticking toothpicks under my eyes to stay awake til the end.
BUT…even though I stayed up until all hours of the night and could not put this book down, I still did not like any of the characters and the things that went down in this story line were horrifying! The story is told from a dual POV from Michael and Erika. I could not connect with either of them as they rotated between the past and present day.
Michael is one part of a group of 4 guys called the horseman. The horseman were the all star basketball players of their high school and the town. The school just turned a blind eye to their antics. They pushed the envelope every chance they got and some of the things that happened were down right cruel. Michael was an awful individual and even getting his perspective, I still could not stomach him.
Erika is Michael’s, younger brother’s girlfriend and his parent’s best friends daughter. She has loved Michael from a far and had been infatuated with him for as long as she could remember. The trouble begins when she is 16 and decides to sneak along on one of the horseman’s “devil nights”. This is one night every year that they get to do whatever they want without consequences. Erika was a ditz, I mean seriously, she just followed along with all of them and enjoyed the “high” she got from being close to Michael. Their relationship was basically pretty much non existent for a majority of the book but she literally followed him around like a lost puppy.
I cannot even put into words how much I hated but loved this book at the same time. I hated everything that happened in it and thought all of these characters belonged in a mental institution, Erika especially. Who the hell does the crazy shit that they do?
BUT.. on the other hand, I could not stop reading and am still reeling from this book the next day. It brought out so many different feelings! So much so that I am going to see if there is a Corrupt 2, and buy it and actually read it!
This book is one part psychological thriller, one part (a very small part) romance, and a lot of parts erotica. The story is very, very dark but if this intrigues you, read it! I would love to hear your thoughts!
