This is a world divided by blood – red or silver.
The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.
That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.
Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.
But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart…
“In the fairy tales, the poor girl smiles when she becomes a princess. Right now, I don’t know if I’ll ever smile again.”
Oh, All the feels. I do not know if I want to cry for I am so sad or laugh hysterically at what has happened in this book?
I adore Mare. I love the fact that she always puts everyone else first. She is fierce and loyal, which may be her greatest fault. She also believes in change, which lands her in quite the predicament. I really liked her relationship with her family. She may have felt like the black sheep but her family truly loves her and she, them.
“So you choose him?’
‘Cal betrayed me, and I betrayed him. And you betrayed us both, in a thousand different ways.’ The words are heavy as stone but right. So right. ‘I choose no one.”
This was the most heartbreaking part of the story.
Cal is a warrior way down deep. He is set to be the next King and to continue the rein that his father had started. He does have a bit of a sweet side but he is betrothed to another. Maven is Cal’s younger brother and he kind of feels left out of his family. He stands in his brother’s shadow and feels that his father does not see his potential. He is very intelligent and crafty when it comes down to it. While his brother is more brawn, he is definitely more brain. He is now betrothed to Princess Mareena and really does steal her heart.
I loved every minute of this story. I never felt a lag in the writing and never got bored with it. I felt like the action was kept up from the beginning straight through until the end. I laughed, had a mild heart attack and cried all throughout the book. Then, I immediately picked up the next in the series because…THAT ENDING!!!! I had to move on straight away!
I feel like I have not read a story that made me want to just jump right into the next book in a very long time and I am happy to say that this one did that for me. Now that the whole series is out, my plan is to keep reading until I see Mare take down all of her enemies.
“Many things led to this day, for all of us. A forgotten son, a vengeful mother, a brother with a long shadow, a strange mutation. Together, they’ve written a tragedy.”
