Forgetting August (Lost & Found, #1)Forgetting August by J.L. Berg

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

She can forgive, but can she forget?

Some days, Everly still thinks she sees him. In the food court at the mall, or in a car speeding past as the light changes. It only lasts a second, but when it happens, she slips back to a time when she was ruled-and nearly ruined-by August Kincaid. And it doesn’t matter that she’s moved on, that she’s about to marry another man. In those moments the only thing she can do to regain control is take a deep breath and remind herself that August can’t hurt her-because he’s in a coma. Except that he’s not anymore.

August is awake. With no memories, he sets out to solve the mystery of his lost life. He unearths a photograph of a beautiful redhead named Everly and knows instinctively that she’s the key. But when he finds her, the August she describes is more monster than man.

Tortured by the thought of having hurt her, August wants only to become the man Everly deserves. As the new August emerges, Everly glimpses the person she first fell in love with. But can she trust that this August is real? When the final secret of their shared past is revealed, one of them will make a choice that changes their future forever . . .

My Review

“No matter how much he loved me. No matter how much I loved him in return. I would never, ever belong to another person. As long as I lived.”

I purchased this book from Book Outlet and I wasn’t sure if I would even like it or not but ended up plowing through both books within 2 days. I adored this first book in the duology.

I couldn’t even imagine being in Everly’s shoes. She was madly in love with August and everything was great for awhile, but August wanted to give her the world and with that came a lot of sacrifices and hatred. It was awful what Everly went through. August became very controlling and wouldn’t let her leave the house, literally locking her in. And then, one fateful night, there is an accident and August ends up in a coma for 2 years!!! Everly moves on, finds another love and is starting to plan her wedding when the hospital calls. August is awake. And her whole world crumbles again.

I adored August. I hated that I liked him so much but I did. We got a dual POV story and we were privy to things that Everly was not, so it helped giving us a different perspective. August’s memory had been wiped clean and he is left with trying to get Everly to fall for him all over again. He knows in his heart that she is someone special to him but really cannot remember much about her. I felt for him on many occasions when Everly would start going off on a rant and he was left just apologizing but not knowing exactly what for.

Now, although I felt for Everly, I did feel that she needed more mental health help than what she was actually getting. She did see a therapist but it seemed like she needed a whole lot more. She made a lot of very rash decisions without thinking them through and then when it came time to own up to them, everyone would just forgive her immediately. I felt that she was a little selfish.

I literally read this entire book in one day. I loved it and it was written well enough that it kept me coming back. I am very glad that I picked this one up:)
