Review: The Cruel Prince by Holly Black|I definitely understand the hype now!

Published January 2nd 2018 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

My thoughts & ramblings….

First impression

Ugh! This book has been everywhere! All over Goodreads, on everyone’s blogs! I have seen many reviews and not one had a bad thing to say. And that cover! Beautiful! I am normally not one to jump on the hype train but I was so intrigued, especially with the second book coming out in January. I didn’t want to fall too far behind if it was a story that I would adore….SO… The kids and I stopped at Barnes & Noble and guess what I came home with? Yup, you guessed it… This book. Shocker! I was interested in reading a book about fey. I have only read one other series and that was way back in 2011, so honestly, I do not recall much. Also, a book with a strong female heroin definitely is right up my alley.

Love this!

A kidnapping, Faeiries, spies…oh my!

The story line starts right off with a bang and sucked me in immediately! Our main character of Jude, Her twin, Taryn, and their older sister, Vivie, are hanging out at home with their Mom & Dad. When there is a knock at the door and some strange man is asking for their Mother. When Mom sees who it is, she tells the kids to run upstairs and hide but Jude being Jude, stays for the action. I do not want to get into too much detail for I do not want to spoil the book for anyone but the kids get captured and taken to Faeirie. This starts a whole new world for them and Jude adapts quickly.

Hey Jude…Don’t be afraid… (Anyone else love the Beatles?)

I adored Jude. There were times that I cringed thinking…What are you doing? But then there were times when she was so smart and she completely shocked me! I felt for her because she just wanted to be one of them and would have done anything to be accepted. She is tough and can take a beat down but she is smart like a fox and can also dish it out.

“If you hurt me, I wouldn’t cry. I would hurt you back.”

The Faerie boys…

  • Locke– He had me fooled. I can admit it. He seemed so sweet and adorable but he is a big ass. yup, I said it.
  • Madoc– I really believe that he loves Jude, Taryn, Vivie and Oak but his need for power just blinds him and he does not make the best decisions. I believe that he thinks they will be for the better for his family but not the best for all of Faerie.
  • CardanOh, my, my, my, my! He is so mean but oh so hot! And I adore his & Jude’s back and forth banter. Just when you think he is the worst human being on earth, he does something that gives you pause and makes you think he is not that bad. But then…whamo! He hits you again and you hate him. He did redeem himself by the end of the book but not by choice…he he hehe.

“Most of all, I hate you because I think of you. Often. It’s disgusting, and I can’t stop.”
― Holly Black, The Cruel Prince

Can I say cliffhanger??

The ending was amazing and I have never been on the edge of my seat so much before with a book. I was chewing my nails, biting my lip and almost screaming at the top of my lungs! I really had not seen any of that coming and I am so needing the next immediately…right now…I NEED IT!

I really like the epilogue and the short story at the end. It was cute how the author tied it all together. So far, this has probably been my favorite read of this year. (I know it just started) I am very much sending a huge suggestion to anyone that has not read this book yet…read it!!! Especially if you adore fantasy. It is one that will not disappoint!

“Father, I am what you made me. I’ve become your daughter after all.”
