Discussion Post: Cleaning Out Your Shelves

Last year I had to clean out my bookshelves. I live in a small cape cod and my bookshelves were taking over the entire house! I had books in every nook and cranny of available space and piled all over my bedroom that hubby basically said “it’s the books or me!” So I said see ya buddy! JOKING!!!

I actually had come to the conclusion myself that I had way too many books and there was no way that I was going to read all of them and some were so old that I had lost interest. At this time, I had 3.5 (one was like half the size of a normal bookshelf) bookshelves and promised the hubs that I would condense down to 1.5!

How do you decide which books to keep?

I had to be very diligent on which books I kept because I had only so much space to occupy. I decided to clear all shelves and start placing books on piles. Favorites & Not Read Yet! I have books that I will always automatically keep on my shelves and those went on first, then I dug through to see which books by some of my favorite authors I had and which books that I had the completed series. Next came any signed copies or personalized copies.

Which books are automatically on my “to keep” shelf:

  • The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins
  • The Lux Series by Jennifer L Armentrout
  • The Covenant Series by Jennifer L Armentrout
  • The Fifty Shades Trilogy by EL James
  • The Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead
  • Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire
  • The Morganville Vampire Series by Rachel Caine

What do you do with your books to get rid of?

I loaded all of my books into totes and ended up sticking them in my walk in closet since this was during the COVID shut down and I was not able to take them anywhere! I refuse to throw a book in the garbage, so I waited until the local library placed a bin in their parking lot for those wanting to donate books and I am currently, slowly taking the bins and emptying them. I still have some but it at least placed a dent in them.

I always either give them to the library or a local thrift store but since COVID began, the thrift store is not taking any books. How sad!

This was a huge undertaking and one that I really had put off for far too long! I feel much better now that it’s done and do not feel as over whelmed with unread books! So, is your bookshelf in need of a clean out?

    1. Thanks! They REALLY needed to be gone through! You just do not have any clue how many you acquire over time until they take over your house. lol! Good luck with your own clean out:) And stay safe!
