One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she’s anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she’s crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she’s not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn’t an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she’s the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

My Thoughts

I was a bit intrigued when reading the synopsis for this book. Gargoyles??? Hmmm, interesting. Well, if the author is Ms. Armentrout, then I couldn’t go wrong…Well…. I WAS DEFINITELY RIGHT!! Another beginning to a great series by JLA!!!

The Storyline was unique….

Layla is a half demon, half gargoyle. She lives with the “wardens” whom are full gargoyle and they keep tabs on the world’s demon population by sending them back to hell before they wreak havoc on the earth. Being half demon is no easy thing for Layla because she can suck the soul out of any living creature. There are times that she really needs to “feed” that her only choice is to munch on some sweets to calm her nerves until the craving goes away. With a life like that…there goes your love life!!!

Layla was kind of kick ass…

I really enjoyed her character. She was not afraid of anything and really took some crap from people. The warden’s had taken her in when she was a small child and she does not remember anything from before. She has no idea of whom her parent’s are and she often wonders about them. She tends to feel a little sorry for herself but doesn’t dwell on it and knows what she has to do for the greater good! She also is stuck between a rock and a hard place with 2 swoony boys and I can tell that her heart is literally being ripped in two!

The two swoony boys….

First we have Zayne. Love the name BTW!!! He has grown up with Layla and it is his father that took her in. He has literally been her best friend and confidante. She has more than friendly feelings for him but their relationship is kind of forbidden so Layla knows that it cannot really lead anywhere.

Next we have Roth. He is the full high demon from down under whom has come “topside” to find and keep watch over Layla. He is the swoony bad boy. (my personal favorite) Since Layla is a warden, she is really forbidden to have a relationship with a demon but, she sort of finds his charm irresistable! (I totally can understand)

Layla finds out a whole lot about her parents, especially her mother and it leaves her guessing whom she can trust? The wardens that had always had her back or the irresistable bad boy who has saved her life a few times and seems to be the only one to tell her the truth?

The ending broke my heart….

UGH Jennifer! You really know how to leave a girl speechless!!! I agonized over the ending for hours and actually went back and reread a few times. I cried…I am not ashamed to admit it!

I want to be like JLA when I grow up….

I do not know where she finds the time to eat, sleep and even live with all of these new releases? I just reviewed another book by her recently that just came out too! The good thing is that you would never know how many books she has coming at one time because it never shows in her work. It is always exemplary!

*taps fingers* Waiting for the next book in this series!!! I hate waiting!
